Figuring out what you want your app to do

No matter how hard you try, some things will always be a mystery. How do you figure out what the feature of an app is that people want? The user experience designers at Apple have been doing this for years, and they have some great advice on how to find out.

  1. Find people who don't use your app or service very often. These are the people whose questions you want to answer. In general, they're more important than the ones who do use your app a lot.
  2. Ask them what they would change about it, if they could. If their request is reasonable, it's something you should look into.
  3. Find a way to measure it. You can get a lot of data from interactions with users, but not all of it is useful. Get the data that gives you insight into the problem your app is trying to solve, and get rid of everything else.*
  4. Build something that lets users get at what they want without too much effort on their part or confusion on yours.
